Complementing Your Acne Treatment With Clean Living

The medicines you take or apply for acne is essentially maintenance medicine - you use it up regularly in order to 1) clear up acne, and 2) prevent acne from recurring. Medicine isn't the only form of acne treatment you should rely on. A good diet and healthy amounts of exercise and sleep should also be among your priorities.

In fact, applying medicine without initiating a lifestyle change may well be equivalent to throwing money down the drain. You can't expect any significant results from your medicines if you don't go out of your way to eliminate the factors that aggravate your condition! Here are a few tips for making the most of your acne treatment.

1. Get plenty of rest. Stress and lack of sleep contribute to hormone imbalance, which is attributed to the proliferation of acne in teenagers and pregnant women, who naturally experience a definite hormone overdrive. Hormone imbalance is also sometimes the cause of some cases of adult acne. Getting enough hours of sleep in a day would regulate your bodily functions and improve your metabolism, thus lessening the need for your body to produce sebum, the hormone-controlled substance that clogs the pores and produces acne.

2. Reduce your intake of oily and salty foods. While oily and salty foods do not directly contribute to the production of sebum, they do get in the way of a healthy metabolism. Reducing your intake of oily and salty foods would overall help your body to function better.

3. Drink plenty of water. Water cleanses the system and replaces lost fluids, so that various nutrients are able to flow unobstructed throughout the body. It may not be necessary to drink eight to ten glasses of water daily, although drinking water and not soda, alcohol or caffeine-based drinks whenever you are thirsty does come with a great deal of health benefits.

A healthy lifestyle may enable you to control the spread of acne even more efficiently than prescription medications. However, the virtues of prescription medicines should not be discounted. Follow these three simple steps and your acne treatment is sure to improve your pimple condition much faster and more efficiently.
