Coconut and Acne: What Is the Connection?

Coconut and acne is said to have a particular connection. Some people have associated coconut oil with the treatment of acne, while some have alleged that coconut and its derivatives cause acne breakouts.

The connection between coconut and acne, in terms of the former being a cure for the latter, is yet to be proven by scientific studies. Despite some people’s claims that their pimples cleared after using coconut oil, these claims are not yet certified by medical experts. In terms of the adverse effect of coconut oil on the skin, this is unproven and highly unlikely.

The common perception is that excess oil can cause acne to breakout. But in this regard, we are talking more about facial and body oil and other types of oil found in cosmetics and hair care products. On the contrary, the oil from coconut is one of the healthiest and purest among all types.

Coconut oil has very little or no cholesterol at all. What it has is lauric acid, a type of acid that supports the body’s defenses against bacteria and viruses. The oil of coconut is actually used in some skin products like sunscreen lotions and compounds for treating skin diseases like psoriasis. In some cases, coconut oil is mixed with tumeric to create a concoction for treating acne.

A lot of people have claimed that applying coconut oil on their faces and leaving it on overnight has helped eradicate their pimples in just a few days. Although claims like these are yet to be certified by scientific studies, it is highly probable that coconut oil is more beneficial than harmful to the skin.

In terms of general health, coconut and its oil have been proven to provide a lot of pure nutrients that can help in strengthening a person’s body. In food preparation, coconut oil is actually preferred by a lot of health and medical experts over other types of oil.

Although the real connection, whether good or bad, between coconut and acne has not been scientifically established yet, people are already heralding the oil from the coconut as a miracle cure for pimples. Whether this is true or not might differ from one person to another. Caution is still needed by those who wish to try this particular oil as an acne cure.
