Some Important Facts in Avoiding Acne

Avoiding acne is not as easy as it sounds. Studies have shown that this skin condition is not curable, although it can be controlled and prevented at the very least. Acne is caused by the glands' excessive secretion of oils which eventually blocks the skin’s pores. The blocked area provides an environment for bacteria to multiply, causing infection and leading to inflammation which manifests as visible lesions or acne.

Avoiding acne can be done in the most basic manner. The important thing to remember is that prevention is always better than treatment. This means that addressing the skin problem before its onset is better than waiting for it to occur and then finding a way to treat the already existing condition.

Preventing acne can start from basic hygiene to adopting a healthy lifestyle. Washing the face at least twice a day with mild facial wash is a must. Keeping your face clean is one way of ensuring that bacteria are not given any place by which to multiply. In cleaning the face, excessive rubbing or scrubbing should be avoided since it can cause skin dryness.

In terms of lifestyle, stress is a primary factor behind the onset of pimples. If your job is highly stressful or there are activities in your life that can cause stress that cannot be avoided, try to find some form of relaxation. Yoga and meditation are two of the most recommended methods to gain relaxation. Engaging in a simple activity such as fishing or walking in the countryside or park can also help relieve stress. Related to stress is lack of sleep. To help keep your skin healthy, try to get at least eight hours of sleep a day.

Exercise is also recommended to maintain a healthy skin. The activity increases blood circulation and results in more oxygen being brought to the major organs including the skin. To make up for the loss of fluids that can be caused by vigorous activities like exercise, drink a lot of water. A person’s ideal water consumption per day is half his or her body weight. Drinking lots of water has also been proven to help in keeping the skin healthy.

Proper diet is also important in maintaining the skin’s health. Vegetables and fruits and high-fiber foods are best when it comes to maintaining a healthy skin. Although specific foods have not been proven to cause acne, it is better to stick with a healthy, natural diet.

Factors that are beyond our control, such as heredity and environment, play major roles in the onset of pimples. With these factors, avoiding acne might not be as easy as following basic health rules, but it won’t hurt to adopt them just the same.
