The Best Acne Treatments, what are they?

There are too many acne fighting products on the market to count, and the majority of them simply do not work. However, there are some that do work quite well. The problem is that many people who suffer from acne will spend quite a bit of time and money trying to find the best acne treatments. Teenagers often outgrow acne before they find a treatment that works.

One of the better acne treatments on the market today is ProActiv. ProActiv seems to be helping many people who could not find other solutions that worked. It has been featured on infomercials, news stories, magazine articles, and newspaper articles. Proactiv is a system that includes a renewing cleanser, revitalizing toner, and repairing lotion. Prescription grade benzoyl peroxide is the active ingredient in ProActiv. ProActiv does not require a prescription.

review from Amazon.com:"Both my self and my daughter have been using this combination for the last 4 months and it has worked well for the both of us."

A treatment that is available by prescription is Accutane. Accutane is a very strong medication, that is only suitable for those who suffer from severe and persistent acne. The medication is taken internally, and there are possible side effects, including birth defects, dry and cracked lips, and liver dysfunction.

Another one of that is used topically is retin-a. Many people have had great success with retin-a, which is used to treat acne, acne scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, skin discoloration, and a variety of other skin afflictions. Retin-a is available by prescription, but some over the counter medications contain retin-a.

Not all treatments come in the form of chemicals. Certain essential oils are also beneficial in the treatment of acne. These essential oils can be applied topically for the treatment of mild to moderate acne. The best essential oils for acne treatment are: Tea Tree Oil, Bergamot Oil, Clove Oil, Lavender Oil, and Rosewood Oil. If the essential oil needs to be diluted, mix it with Grapeseed Oil for best results.

In order to find the best acne treatment for you, start with essential oils. If that doesn't work, go to the next step by trying ProActive. If ProActive doesn't work, then try a prescription alternative. You may also consider being tested for food allergies, as certain allergies can cause acne. In this case, the only treatment you need is to eliminate those certain foods from your diet.

  • How Would a Dermatologist Treat Their Own Adult Acne?

That's the premise behind the video short titled "If I Had Acne in Middle Age." Amy Taub, MD, talks about why acne appears in middle age and how best to treat it.

Adult acne is fairly common, especially in women. If you have it, you know it doesn't respond well to the acne treatments you used as a teenager.

Dr. Taub suggests instead medications like spironolactone or procedures like photodynamic therapy.

The video does mention low-dose Accutane being a treatment option for adult acne. Accutane was taken off the market several months ago, but there are other brands that can be used as alternatives. If you're interested in going this route, ask your doctor about low-dose isotretinoin.

Dr. Taub also mentions how acne in adult women tends to be inflammatory nodules and cysts, mainly around the jawline, chin and neck. In my experience I've found this to be true as well, both in myself and the clients I work with.

I recommend seeing a dermatologist for adult acne. It generally doesn't respond well to over-the-counter washes and the like.

Although it's tough to be dealing with acne well past the time you thought you would have outgrown it, take heart knowing that adult acne can be controlled.

  • Over The River and Through the Woods...

Don't forget to pack your acne medications for that trip to Grandmother's house.

Being consistent with your treatments is extremely important, so missing doses during the holidays is not a good gift for your skin.

Already hundreds of miles away from home and your acne treatments? Try an over-the-counter option in the interim.

If you're using prescription benzoyl peroxide, or any medication that contains benzoyl peroxide (like BenzaClin or Benzamycin), pick up an OTC benzoyl peroxide lotion. Follow the usage directions until you can make the switch back to your old medication.

Other over-the-counter options include salicylic acid, sulfur and resorcinol. These can be found in cleansers, creams and lotions.

If you've got a longer trip planned and you're going to be without your medications for more than a few days, call your doctor and ask for a new prescription sent to a pharmacy near you. What you should never do, though, is borrow someone else's prescription acne medication.

Maybe it's your teen who forgets his acne medications (and you're tired of nagging him about it!) If your kid spends a lot of time at Grandma's house, his other parent's place (or anywhere else) this tip may help keep the peace, if not on earth then at least in your household.

    Have a great trip!
